The Right Original Art For You!

There has been an increased awareness and appreciation of original art available in the last few years and a lot of this can be credited to the media. Television programs and newspaper supplements are increasingly being produced with the focus on art and sculpture. There are numerous experts that people watch on a daily basis, showing how a piece of original art can enhance the look of almost any room. This much information and advice can seem daunting, so how do you start the process of selecting the right original art for you and your home? Here are some pointers to help make the process of buying art just that little bit easier!

What style of original art do you like?

The first stage in choosing the right original art for your home is to decide what you actually want. This may sound obvious, but it really just comes down to a few main categories:

  • Hanging art - This can include oil paintings, abstract art, or any other piece of artwork that can be hung on your wall.
  • Photography - Styles of photography varies immensely, but the main decision is whether it is colour or black & white.
  • Sculpture - A piece of sculpture can be made from a multitude of materials, from clay to bronze.

Once you have decided which form of original art you want to buy, you then need to research the artist's work. You may already have a favorite who creates artwork that you love, or you may want a piece of art that is in the style of one of the old masters. What better place to start your research than the internet?

What space are you providing for your artwork?

Once you have decided on the type of original art that you want for your home, you need to work out the size constraints that are imposed by space. If you are looking for a piece, or pieces, of hanging art you have to make sure that it will fit in where you would like it to go without dominating the rest of your interior decor.

Another consideration is the style of the room that you are buying the art for. Original art can come in so many different shapes and sizes, so you should not have much difficulty finding your perfect piece of art. It is worth considering though, that a renaissance oil painting, whilst impressive, would not be best suited in a modern minimalist living area. Similarly, a huge abstract wall hanging in a traditional study would almost certainly look out of place.

Sticking to your budget!

This is one of the hardest parts of the process of buying art to stick to, especially if you are thinking of buying art from an auction. It is too easy to get carried away and end up spending far more than you first intended. If you do find yourself bidding at an auction, stop bidding when the price of the artwork exceeds your budget. You must be strict with yourself, but just remember - there is always another piece of art out there to fall in love with!

Your budget is equally as important if you are buying art from a gallery, or direct from the artist. Talk to the artist or gallery owner and let them know what your budget is. They can then help you find the perfect piece of original art to suit your pocket. Many people begin collecting art by buying smaller artwork, moving on later to larger pieces.

The best piece of advice we can give is to buy what you like - it's not just about the investment (although this is a very good reason to buy the right piece). If it is art by a respected and established artist then it will indeed grow in value and your investment will be safe, but it's still nice to enjoy looking at it first!
