Buying Original Art As A Gift
No matter how good your intentions, buying original art as a gift for someone else can be difficult business. There are many things you should consider when choosing a piece of art that you hope will be appreciated by someone else, and here are a few questions you should ask yourself before taking the plunge!
How well do you know the person?
This may sound like an obvious question to ask, but it is important that you know something about the person you are buying for. It is not likely to be a good idea to buy a piece of original art for the person who you are replacing at work as you won't have had much chance to get to know their tastes. The office collection would be better spent on something different.
If you think you know the person fairly well then you still need to narrow down the style of original art that they would most enjoy looking at. Their personal taste may be very different to that of their home. When it comes down to it, the original art is going to need to fit in with their interior design, and not with the clothes they wear. Many people's homes differ from their own personal style because of the other members of their household. This is most often the case with men, but it can also apply to women.
What space do they have for the work of art?
Once you have decided on the style of original art that you are considering buying, you need to make sure that the recipient has the space to hang it! You don't want your gift to end up as one of the many that are no doubt stored in the loft and never get seen, simply because there is nowhere suitable to display them.
The actual space for the abstract art or impressionism, whatever you have decided, is not the only thing to consider. Is the space available in a room that the artwork would compliment? Many people prefer to have original art that compliments the interior decor of the room; others want it to add a contrast so as to be a focal point. You need to decide which the recipient would want and if the space exists in the appropriate room.
Do they have any favorite artist?
It is not surprising that, just like other hobbies and interests, people interested in art may have favorite artists. This doesn't mean that they actually own any from that artist yet though, and you could be the one responsible for starting their collection!
How much are you looking to spend?
You are likely to have set yourself a budget for the original art that you want to buy, and this could be the deciding factor in whether you purchase a sculpture, original oil painting or any other hanging art. Always be clear in your mind as to how much you are looking to spend. Remember, size does not matter when it comes to original art and your gift will be far more likely to be appreciated if it meets all of the above criteria, but is a smaller piece of art, than if you go out and buy a large piece just because it looks like you have spent more.
Don't forget that it may also be possible to get the opinion of the recipient. This could be done discreetly or directly, depending on how much of a surprise you want the art to be. Sometimes, it is better to check that it is what they want, rather than end up buying something they won't enjoy.
