Art for the office
There are many reasons why art can be beneficial in the workplace, but you can basically narrow it down to two groups: One, it is of benefit to visitors to the workplace, and two, it is beneficial to the workforce.
How Does Art Benefit Visitors To Your Workplace?
There are many different views regarding the use of hanging art and sculptures etc… to benefit visitors to the workplace. This stems from the number of the companies that are considering enhancing their workplace for visitors. The first thought process in deciding if displaying works of art will be of benefit is to study the types of visitors that the individual workplace has.
The reception area is, for most businesses, the first impression a visitor will see, and as they say - first impressions last! Reception areas vary in size and style, and this will very much dictate the type of artwork that you may consider buying. Companies will often display their work or products in their reception area and these can actually be treated as works of art in their own right if they are displayed professionally and in the correct manner. A professional photographer can produce creative wall hangings from most products and this in itself will give the product a unique look and create interest amongst potential buyers.
Works of art, such as oil paintings, will enhance any reception area and imply an impression of success. Original art doesn't need to be expensive, but it can give the impression of a successful company at the top of their game. It can also act as a much needed icebreaker to potential negotiations.
One of the most overlooked benefits to visitors is the use of colour. The psychology of colour is studied by interior designers all over the world and they have identified the fact that different colours have certain affects on the people's moods. These colours can subconsciously create a feeling of calm, or indeed the opposite - depending on the colours used. Many Doctors surgeries and the like have calming colour schemes, and this is reflected in the artwork they choose to display. On the other side of the coin, a young dynamic company is more likely to choose bright colours to give a feel of youth and confidence.
How Art Benefits the Workforce
Offices and open-plan areas are the best type of workplace to display art. A lot of workers in this environment will be working on computers for long periods of time and artwork can provide a much-needed distraction to prevent excessive concentration. Health and safety initiatives recommend that people take a break from the computer screen and a piece of artwork can offer another focus.
If the workforce is in a creative industry, then displaying art can provide inspiration. This is certainly true if the art is based on recent successes or products. Again, photography is a wonderfully creative medium for producing original art.
Undoubtedly colour has an effect on the workforce too and any interior designer would be able to offer advice on the best colour schemes to include in the workplace. Art should be enjoyed, but it can also improve the productivity of people who see it. Colours should not be so calming that staff falls asleep at their desks, but neither should they be stressful! A mixture of colours reflected in the art often gives the best results.
To summarize, the individual identity of different areas of the workplace should not be overlooked. Despite how strong a corporate identity is, all of its employees are unique individuals. Displaying art is another way of highlighting this individuality. Of course, art can be used that to compliment the company colour scheme around it, rather than having a complete makeover to match the colours of the Art, but having unique Artwork provides evidence that a company treats each of its employees as individuals.
